What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are screw-like in shape. They’re designed to be placed below the gumline and into the jawbone to restore the missing root structure of any number of lost teeth. Due to their biocompatible nature, dental implants are able to naturally fuse with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, allowing them to act as a strong and unwavering foundation for a dental crown, bridge, or denture to be attached to.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Getting dental implants involves a specialized, multi-step process that takes several months. While this may sound like a long time, these remarkable prosthetic dental devices offer a range of long-term benefits that make them well worth the effort. At Casper Family Dentistry of Dallas, we will be happy to refer you to a trusted specialist who can safely place your dental implants so they can last for many years. While each patient’s treatment will be unique, they will all involve the following four steps:

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Nguyen will carefully inspect your mouth and review your medical history to determine if you can be a suitable candidate for dental implants. If necessary, we can schedule you for periodontal therapy or refer you to an outside specialist for bone grafts so your mouth can become healthy enough to receive implants. Once your mouth is free from gum disease and your jaws and sufficiently strong, we will develop your treatment plan and walk you through the timeline and associated costs.

Dental Implant Surgery

We refer our patients to trusted specialists for dental implant surgery. They will begin the process by administering a local anesthetic to ensure that you feel no pain, and you may receive sedation dentistry if necessary. Then, they will make a small incision in the gum tissue and place titanium posts in your jawbone. They will then close the gums and place protective caps over your new implants.

Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

After you receive your dental implants, they will need several months to fuse with your jawbone through the natural process of osseointegration. This gives your implants the strong foundation they need to function just like real teeth for life, and it is a major part of why this treatment is so successful. Once your implants have healed sufficiently, you will be scheduled for a minor surgical procedure that places abutment pieces on your implants. These pieces will allow your implants to support lifelike restorations such as a crown, denture, or bridge which will be manufactured at a trusted dental lab based on detailed measurements of your mouth.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

When your final restoration is ready, you’ll return to our office so Dr. Nguyen can mount it on your implant(s). After your crown, bridge, or denture is securely fastened, we’ll check to make sure that your bite is properly aligned and your teeth are looking great. After any final adjustments, you’ll be ready to show your beautifully complete smile to the world.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer a number of benefits that make them a top choice among patients. Some of these advantages that distinguish them from traditional bridges and dentures include the fact that they can last for up to 25 years or longer with good dental hygiene. This means fewer replacements over the years and less visits to your implant dentist in Dallas. Some other benefits include recovering up to 80% of your original bite force and natural looking and feeling results.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

Dental implants are a versatile treatment that can help patients experiencing nearly any type of tooth loss regain their smile. Whether you’re missing one, several, or an entire row of teeth, implants can act as a foundation for a variety of dental restorations. However, not every patient may be a good candidate for this procedure. Typically, those who can proceed with dental implant placement have adequate jawbone density, good oral health, and good overall health. During your initial consultation, our team can help you determine whether dental implants are a good option for you.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

Dental Implant FAQs

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants frequently last longer than thirty years, and the single most important factor in their lifespan is how well you take care of them. To ensure that your new teeth last as long as possible, take care to brush, floss, and use antibacterial mouthwash daily. It’s also important to keep up with your biannual dental exams and cleanings at our Dallas office, and it’s a great idea to avoid foods that are hard or sticky while refraining from using your teeth to open packages. Smoking is also linked to implant failure, so quitting this habit can also be an excellent way to set your replacement teeth up for long-term success. Since dental implants often last several times longer than traditional restorations like dentures and bridges, they may also save a patient thousands of dollars by negating the need for expensive replacement appliances.

Does Getting Dental Implants Hurt?

After you are approved for the treatment, you’ll be scheduled to have your dental implants placed. You’ll receive a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort at the start of the procedure, and you may also receive a sedation treatment if necessary. It’s also unlikely that you’ll experience any distress when receiving dental implants because the jawbone contains relatively few nerve endings anyway. While you should experience no pain during surgery, your mouth will probably be sore for a few days afterward. You can help yourself stay comfortable by following your post-op instructions as well as taking over-the-counter pain medication or applying a cold compress as needed. However, call Dr. Kingsberg if your discomfort doesn’t get better after two or three days.

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Dental implants are perfectly safe for most patients with adequate oral health as long as they are placed by a qualified professional. While gum disease or low jawbone density may complicate the process, these issues can often be addressed with treatments like periodontal therapy or bone grafts before the implants are placed. If you have any health issues such as cancer, diabetes, or another medical condition, be sure to mention them during your consultation so Dr. Kingsberg can plan your treatment to maximize your chances of success.

How Successful Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants boast an incredible success rate of over 95% even ten years after placement, making them a sound investment for your oral health. However, the long-term health of your implant ultimately depends on how well you take care of it with proper oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, smart eating decisions, and other good habits. Since dental implants that replace molars typically experience more strain during the chewing process than those that replace the front teeth, they may be more likely to fail sooner.
